News SSA Reminds Partners of SSI Reporting Responsibilities
On October 7, 2026, Nick Perrine, Chief Communications Officer, issued guidance to community partners on reducing improper payments by helping people receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) report changes promptly. SSI is a needs-based program, so changes in income, resources, living arrangements, and other factors can affect both eligibility and payment amount.
Changes must be reported no later than the 10th day of the month after the change occurs.
What must be reported
- Income. Changes in earned income, including wages and self-employment income, and unearned income such as Social Security payments, pensions, or cash received from friends or relatives.
- Living arrangement. Moving, changes in household members, or changes in rent or utility costs.
- Resources. Bank accounts, cash, property, or other assets. SSA notes that "SSI resource limits are $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple."
- Marital status. Marriage, divorce, or separation.
- Citizenship or lawful non-citizen status.
- Leaving the United States for 30 consecutive days or more.
- Eligibility for other benefits or assistance.
For a married person living with a spouse, changes affecting the spouse must also be reported. For a child receiving SSI, changes involving the child's parents must be reported.
Reporting wages
People who work and receive SSI must report wages by the 10th of each month, though SSA encourages reporting by the 6th day of the month after payday to reduce overpayment risk. Monthly wage reporting reminders are available.
Wages can be reported:
- Through an employer using the Payroll Information Exchange (PIE), authorized by Form SSA-8240 online, at a local office, or by phone. Wages must continue to be reported another way until confirmation arrives that PIE processing has started.
- Through a personal my Social Security account.
- Through the SSA Mobile Wage Reporting app, free in the Apple App Store and Google Play.
- By calling the automated Telephone Wage Reporting System.
- By contacting a local Social Security office.
One important detail: before using an automated wage reporting option for the first time, or after changing employers, the person or their representative payee must contact SSA to provide employer information and the employer identification number (EIN). SSA can be reached Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778).
What this means for your practice
Where to focus:
- Treat the EIN step as the real barrier. Automated reporting is only available after SSA has the employer information on file. Someone who starts a job and downloads the app assuming they are covered may go months unreported. Build that first phone call into your employment support process.
- Shift the target date from the 10th to the 6th. It gives a buffer and makes the habit easier to build around payday.
- Watch the resource limit after approval. A retroactive payment can push someone over $2,000. SSI back pay is excluded from resources for nine months, which gives a window to spend it on housing costs, furnishings, or other needs. Plan that spend-down deliberately rather than discovering the problem later.
- Consider an ABLE account. For people whose disability began before the applicable age threshold, which the ABLE Age Adjustment Act raised to 46 effective January 1, 2026, an ABLE account allows savings beyond the SSI resource limit. Verify current rules before advising, since the expansion is recent.
- Remember that cash from friends and relatives counts. People doubling up or receiving help from family often do not know this is reportable. Ask about it plainly and without judgment, because the alternative is an overpayment discovered two years later.
- Revisit reporting at every check-in. Income, resources, living arrangement, household composition. Four questions, a few minutes.
